Oksana, (Oksana Tykha - VP Membership).
Last night, my family enjoyed the gift of chocolate that you gave me while I visited the Ukraine. I thought I would let you know that everyone thought it was very good and wanted to thank you for the kindness. It was much appreciated.

I hope you have a great week. Please give my thanks to the entire club upon your next meeting. I really enjoyed meeting with you all. I can honestly say that if I lived in Kiev, I would want to attend myself.

Thank you again,

Regards,

Bret

The story about Dr. Ralf Smedley
Ralph C. Smedley, Feb.22 1878 – Sept.11, 1965 was the founder of Toastmasters International, a speaking organization with more than 235,000 members in 106 countries and more than individual 12,000 clubs.

Smedley was born in Waverly, Illinois. After his graduation from the University in 1903, he started working at the local YMCA.

As Educational Director of the "Y" he discovered there was a need for training in speech because many young men were tongue-tied and awkward in their presentations. To help them improve, he created a club where they could practice public speaking in an atmosphere of acceptance and assistance. The idea was a success – the young men’s skills improved. However, the club was not self-sustaining.

Four times, Dr. Smedley was transferred by his employer, and each time a club he left behind eventually died. After 16 years, he was finally transferred to Santa Ana, California, where his concept of self-sustaining clubs for the practice and improvement of public speech grew into reality.

Dr. Smedley established Toastmasters as “a nonprofit, noncommercial movement, for the benefit of its members,” and never made a penny from his creation.
He worked for the YMCA until retirement at the age of 63 and then volunteered his services to Toastmasters until shortly before his death at 87.

The Club in Santa Ana is fluorishing nowadays and still bears the #1.

Dr. Ralph C. Smedley Citation:
"The unprepared speaker has a right to be afraid."

Let me deliver reasoning about contribution to Your personal growth, which could be obtained as a result of different Club meeting roles performing.

And the starting point is:
THE ROLE OF TOASTMASTER

The Toastmaster is a meeting’s director, host and emcee. (Inexperienced members and guests are usually not being assigned for this role until they are thoroughly familiar with the club and its procedures.)

Toastmaster introduces each speaker and evaluators.
Introductions must be brief and carefully planned.

It’s a good idea to look at the Agenda while preparing for the meeting to be aware of the following details:

Speech topic and title

Manual and project title

Assignment objectives

Speaker’s personal objectives

Delivery time.

It’s also useful to look through the list of Evaluation Team and to think what could be the introduction of each appearance.  In other words, to plan remarks you can use to make smooth transitions from one portion of the program to another.

The best practice shows that the introductions might be between 30-60 seconds in length.

On meeting day Toastmaster arrives beforehand to make sure the stage is set for a successful meeting.

When it’s time to start the program, the Club President calls the meeting to order. Sometimes he or she will make announcements, introduce guests or conduct other club business before introducing Toastmaster of the event.

Important hint is to give attention to the time. Toastmaster is responsible for beginning and ending the meeting on time.

In some clubs it is customary for the Toastmaster and the person assuming control of the stage to exchange a handshake. This isn’t required, but it’s sometimes done to help new members recognize when control of the lectern passes from the Toastmaster to the speaker and vice versa.

Serving as Toastmaster is an excellent way to perfect many valuable skills, as a consequence of striving to conduct the meeting worthy best Club practice.

Preparation is the key to success!

Above statement is a synopsis of Toastmasters' role put on TM International site. More details please find at:
